But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.’ Luke 14:18
So many things we have left undone for God, when we could have done them, all because we live from excuses. The worst part is that we are aware of it but we do not change. Why does this happen? Why do we allow it? And the answer is that we have no fear of the Lord.
Since there is no fear, there is no obedience, and the result is obvious. We do nothing; but we must become aware of it and face our reality, for we have to do it even if we do not like it, out of gratitude and love for Him.
True love is shown when we put an end to excuses and act no matter the sacrifice, for we know it is an honor to serve Him but not all of us have this knowledge. On the contrary, we come into his presence and ask Him to bless us despite all the excuses we have made. For when it comes to praying there is always an excuse: “It’s that I am very tired when I arrive”, “I wake up very early to go to work”, “I don’t have enough time”, and many more excuses. When it comes to fasting, we do the same, for it is a pattern we have taken for everything that involves a sacrifice.
Our flesh plays an important part in all of this. It wants to govern us, but we must discipline it and not lose heart until we have completely submitted it to our spirit. How sad it is for Him when you tell Him “I can´t!” He is always willing to tell us “It is possible and I will do it out of love for you.”
