And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
When we are born, our parents give us a name. When we hear it, we respond instantly, without thinking, because that name identifies us amidst others. But our real name is written in the heavens, and it is given by our heavenly Father. For this name reflects everything that we are in Him, so we leave aside any heritage from our natural parents and take on the spiritual heritage that identifies us in the spiritual world.
This name gives us identity and assurance of who we are in the Lord. That is why it is so important to know what our spiritual name is, to understand the power that works in us. As it is the case of Peter, who went from Simon, which means a weak reed, to being Peter, meaning rock. From being something weak in nature, in the spiritual he was strong and resistant, a rock on which Christ would raise his Church.
Let us not look at the natural heritage inherited from our earthly fathers, but the spiritual. That one was given to us since before the formation of the world and before we were in our mothers’ wombs, to make wonders and marvels in his name.
